How to Transfer Media From a Laptop to a Cell Phone Using Infrared

In this day and age of Bluetooth most people have forgotten that using infrared is another viable option for transferring files wirelessly. While the transfer speeds are not as fast Bluetooth it will get the job done.

Steps (Tap on step to mark as complete)

 Step 1 of 3Turn your computer on and go to "Start Menu" and then to the "Control Panel." Look for the "Infrared" icon and click on it. Click on "Activate Infrared" and then "Ok." Step 2 of 3Turn your cell phone on and go to the Main Menu and then "Setting" and turn the infrared to "On." Set your cell phone next to the infrared port on your computer. Step 3 of 3Go back to your computer and find the file that you wish to send. Right-click on the file and select "Send" and "To Infrared Device." A window on your cell phone will appear and will ask you if you wish to accept the transfer. Click "Yes" and wait for the file to transfer.

Infrared is a technology that allows you to send files and other data to cell phones or computers. Both devices need to have infrared capabilities to send and transfer data. And for it to work, both devices need to face each other to transmit and receive the signal. While the process is a bit slower than Bluetooth, infrared still does the job effectively.

Using a Computer

 Step 1 of 3Setup an infrared connection. If you're doing this by computer, you first need to setup an infrared connection. Go to Start > Control Panel >System Maintenance > Device Manager. Enter in your administration password if prompted. You should see "Infrared devices," double-click this option then right-click and select "Enable." Before exiting out, be sure you have this option checked, "Allow others to send files to my computer using infrared communications." Step 2 of 3Send a file or folder to your computer. Do this by making sure your mobile phone and computer are facing one another, to where the infrared ports are directly in front of each other. Wait a few moments for the infrared icon to appear on your computer. Step 3 of 3Double-click the infrared icon. Choose whichever file you want to transfer and select "Send." To receive the file onto the computer, wait until you are asked whether you want to receive or reject the file. Click "Accept" and the file will be sent to your computer.

Transferring Files With Cell Phones

 Step 1 of 3Align the phones. Both infrared ports need to face each other. Step 2 of 3Select the file you want to transfer. From the menu select "Beam" or "Transfer File" depending on the model of your phone. Step 3 of 3Accept the file. Choose where to save the file and wait until the transfer is complete.

What is Infrared

Infrared is light comprised of electromagnetic energy. Infrared waves are shorter than a microwave but longer than visible light rays. Infrared is invisible to the human eye. The human body naturally receives and gives off infrared light. Objects that aren't hot enough to produce visible light release infrared energy. This explains why many household devices like your TV remote control, thermometers and cameras use infrared.

Infrared Light and Your TV

The "brain" or processor in your remote control detects that you have pressed a button. The processor knows which button you've pressed. Now that the remote knows what you want it to do, it sends a string of messages in binary code to the processing unit. These messages are sent via your Infrared light emitting diode in your remote control. The signal is transmitted to a receiver in your TV. Your TV performs the command you gave it.

Heat and Infrared

Infrared energy is used in manufacturing during the heating process. Some people have infrared heat systems in their house. The jury is still out as to whether infrared heat is a good form of energy conservation. In theory, it seems to be. Since infrared can detect energy, an infrared heating system can apply heat where it is most needed. For example, If you aren't in the living room, there's no need for a great deal of heat to be used there.
