REFERENCE ASN - AS Info - Autonomous System Numbers

ASN - AS Numbers - Autonomous System Numbers

An Autonomous System (AS) is a connected group of IP networks that adhere to a single and clearly defined unique routing policy, i.a.w. its policy differs from its border gateway peers.

An ASN (Autonomous System Number) is a globally unique number that is used to identify an Autonomous System (AS) and it enables an AS to exchange exterior routing information with neighboring Autonomous Systems.

An AS is also sometimes referred to as a routing domain. There are a limited number of available Autonomous System Numbers (AS Numbers), and therefore it is important to determine if a site requires a unique AS Number or not.

Sites that do not require a unique AS Number should use one or more of the AS Numbers reserved for private use.

Those numbers are 64512 ... 65535.

Current guidelines require a network to be multi-homed, and have a unique routing policy for an ASN to be assigned. Requests must show the routing policy of the AS.

Any organisation can acquire an ASN but they must be requested by a Local Internet Registry (LIR).

AUTONOMOUS SYSTEM NUMBERS (last updated 12 April 2005) The Autonomous System (AS) numbers are used by various routing protocols. AS numbers are allocated to the regional registries by the IANA.

AfriNIC <hostmaster at afrinic.net> APNIC <helpdesk at apnic.net> ARIN <hostmaster at arin.net> LACNIC <hostmaster at lacnic.net> RIPE-NCC <ncc at ripe.net>

AS Numbers can be obtained from the registry in your region. Listed below are the allocated blocks to the regional registries.
